art classes; what about MY artistic freedom?!

D: rant incoming.
i just had to get this off my mind.
----

so sin's in this cartoon animation class in school.
it's pretty nice, except for the large amount of paper we waste daily. why the hell can't we learn how to animate on the COMPUTER??
Dx i feel like the only person who knows how to open up macromedia flash and make just a line move across the screen.

we get graded depending on how much cnotes [think money] we get paid. for every project/assignment we complete, mr. c looks it over and pays us according to how well it fits his criteria, which is entirely in his head. at the end of the grading period, we total up our cnotes and look it up on the grading scale to see what we get. for the 10 week progress report, sin gets a fricken B.
why? maybe because my ball bounce wasn't his idea of a ball bounce.

i love art, but i hate art classes. there is just so much freedom that when i actually attempt to do an assignment, i'm cracking my brain in half in order to know if i'm doing it right. to me art isn't like a 10 page essay; at least in a 10 page essay you can go back to whatever part you want and EDIT it. for art, you have to redo the entire shit.

you go insane trying to figure out if what you're doing fits what the teacher wants. but they don't tell you exactly what they want; no, they give you a fucking sentence and leave you alone from there. you ask for specifics, they tell you to do it however you want. but in the back of your head, you know that if you put too much of 'yourself' in it, it's going to get out of hand and the teacher's going to say you didn't follow directions. yet if you don't put 'yourself' into it, they're going to think you bullshitted the entire thing and didn't even attempt to put in any effort.

maybe it's just that i need more directions when i'm told to do something. but it's either you do it their way and be considered unoriginal, or you do it your way and make everybody think you're trying to show off. it isn't a commission where the requester gives you complete artistic freedom because at least then you can go crazy without that much worry. it's a fucking piece of art that is graded and will probably affect your future for better or for worse.

and sin's crazy, unfortunately the teacher doesn't know that. when you tell the class to animate a ball bounce, sin doesn't just see a ball that comes out of nowhere and bounces off the page, it's a whole fucking dodgeball game with fifty people fighting over control of the world.
he says 'keep it simple'. FINE. I'LL KEEP IT SIMPLE. BUT NOOOO.
HOW COME I GET POINTS DEDUCTED FOR SOMETHING YOU ASKED FOR?!?! GAAAHHHHHHHHH.

okay i'll shut up now.
